Steroids
Tomorrow at 2pm, Senator George Mitchell will be releasing his 20 month investigation on performance enhancing drugs in baseball. I have a few thoughts that I want to write down before the report comes out.
When this whole Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa thing started, I was not a die hard follower of baseball. After that year, I still wasn’t. However, the two of them did help peak my interest in baseball. That year I followed baseball very closely and not because of the home run chase. Ok it was about the home run chase, but not because of the home runs. At first I watched because I was curious. I continued watching because of the personalities that McGwire and Sosa had. They may have been cheating, but they were good competitors and seemed like good sports.
That segways well to Barry Bonds. He seems like an asshole, or at least he acts that way to the media. Therefore even though I don’t like him, I try not look at him as anymore of a cheater than anyone else in baseball. This is because I do not know who did or did not use drugs. In fact, the pitcher who threw him the record breaking pitch was busted in the minor leagues for steroids.
Though I would be sad to hear about certain names tomorrow, I’m not sure anything would surprise me. I will try not look down on anyone is mentioned. I just hope that people that are mentioned stand up and take some responsibility. I also hope that the report lays out the criteria for which it uses for including the names. I hope it’s more than just the word of drug dealing trainer who is trying to get brownie points before going to jail.
Finally, I hope that the report gives the proper amount of blame to MLB and the ownership. They had to know that things were going on, even if they just avoided looking into certain areas. I, as a fan, take responsibility for my part in it. I watched the steroid users on TV and enjoyed it. I am a big baseball fan now, in part, to the excitement of the McGwire/Sosa chase. I am not sorry for that, but that does mean that I am partially responsible. I hope I’m not the only one that admits that.
Nothing could excite me over baseball. That being said, I’m glad an Asterisk will be branded onto the record baseball being sent to the hall of fame.
If I was a baseball fan, I would not enjoy or encourage this. I watch the Tour de France, and frankly, the doping there ruins it.
To hell with them, and I’m sure the report will be fair, that’s what the author does.
